Owl Scarf

My cousin loves owls.  So when I drew her name in our Christmas swap, I came up with this quick scarf project for her.  I created this chunky scarf with Tahki Yarns Montana.  It has two owls with button eyes on each end with k1, p1 ribbing for the middle.

Below are instructions to make your own.

Materials:
2 skeins, Tahki Yarns Montana (shown in black)
US#10 / 6mm needles
Cable needle
8 small buttons

Abbreviations:
C4B - Cable 4 Back - move next 2 stitches onto cable needle, hold to back, knit following 2 stitches as normal from left needle, then knit remaining 2 stitches from cable needle.

C4F - Cable 4 Front - move next 2 stitches onto cable needle, hold to front, knit following 2 stitches as normal from left needle, then knit remaining 2 stitches from cable needle.

Directions:
Cast on 22 stitches.  Work 3 rows in garter stitch.

To create the owls:
Row 4 (RS): k1, p1, k8, p2, k8, p1, k1
Row 5 (and all WS rows): p1, k1, p8, k2, p8, k1, p1
Row 6: k1, p1, C4B, C4F, p2, C4B, C4F, p1, k1
Rows 8 - 12: k1, p1, k8, p2, k8, p1, k1
Row 14: k1, p1, C4B, C4F, p2, C4B, C4F, p1, k1
Row 16: k1, p1, k8, p2, k8, p1, k1
Row 18: k1, p1, C4B, C4F, p2, C4B, C4F, p1, k1
Row 20: k1, p1, k2, p4, k2, p2, k2, p4, k2, p1, k1

Rows 21 - 23: work in garter stitch

Rows 24 on: work in k1, p1 ribbing

Work until finished with 1st skein, put all 22 stitches on a holder or spare needle.

Repeat above for second skein of yarn.

Finishing:
Use the kitchener stitch to graft your two halves together.  The Purl Bee has a wonderful tutorial on this method here.

Take the eight buttons and divide them among your owls, 2 each.  Sew them onto the scarf about where the eyes look right to you.  I used a lighter brown thread to distinguish the eyes somewhat.
